Guardian Angel Safeguards

A Safeguard is an insignia or sacramental (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church No. 1679) that leads us to experience the closeness and protection of God, preserving us from evil and stimulating our confidence in the infinite merits of Jesus Christ or the intercession of some saint. . It should never be confused with a magical amulet that alone grants the graces we ask for. It had its origin in France (hence its name: Sauvegarde) due to the spread of the “Stop!” of the Heart of Jesus.

The holy Angels are powerful and intelligent spiritual beings mentioned in the Bible from beginning to end. Every Christian has a guardian angel, as tradition and liturgy teach us. The Lord Jesus himself alludes to its existence (cf. Matthew 18:20) and Saint Paul confirms it (cf. Hebrews 1:14). The word of God says: «Behold, I am going to send an Angel before you, to guard you on the way and lead you to the place that I have prepared for you. Be good in his presence and listen to his voice. Do not be rebellious against him, for my Name is in him” (Exodus 23, 20-23).

The Safeguard of the Guardian Angel reminds us that God has provided us with a heavenly protector, who acts throughout life as our “bodyguard” and companion on the path. Jesus Christ experienced horror on Holy Thursday in the Garden of Olives, faced with the torments and bloody death that he would suffer. At that moment, the Comforting Angel appeared to him to strengthen him (cf. Luke 22, 43), encouraging him with words of comfort and deep strength, which revived the flagging powers of his soul. By devoutly carrying this Safeguard, we will continually feel the presence of our Guardian Angel and intercessor before the throne of the Most High.
