In the dream Joseph receives messages from God, who warns him of the danger that King Herod represents, recommending him to love and protect Mary and the Child. It is the dream that Joseph assumes the role of putative Father of Jesus and of all men, an archetypal figure, protector, defender, consoler.

The image is inspired by the Gospel of Saint Matthew, where it is said that Saint Joseph had the experience of receiving messages from God in four different dreams.

“Dear Saint Joseph, as you rest in the Lord, confident in his absolute power and goodness, look at me. Please take my need (mention his request) in your heart, dream about it and present it to your Son. Help me then, good Saint Joseph, to hear the voice of God, to stand up and act with love.”
