Meaning of Michael in Hebrew: “Who is like God?”

Saint Michael is one of the main angels; His name was the war cry of the good angels in the battle waged in heaven against the enemy and his followers. His name is found four times in Scripture: Daniel 10:13-21, Daniel 12, Saint Jude 1:9 and Revelation 12:7.

According to these biblical passages, Christian tradition gives Saint Michael four offices:

• Fight against Satan.

• Rescue the souls of the faithful from the power of the enemy, especially at the hour of death.

• Be the champion of God's people: the Jews in the old Law, the Christians in the New Testament; Therefore he was the patron of the Church, and of the order of knights during the Middle Ages.

• Call from the earth and bring the souls of men to judgment (signifer S. Michael repraesentet eas in lucam sanctam, Offert. Miss Defunct. “Constituit eum principem super animas suscipiendas”, Antiph. off. Cf. The Shepherd of Hermas, III, Simil. 7, 3).
